I could write for hours about why you should consider a cleaner life, and often get asked why I decided to ditch the dirty stuff. Well, not in those words but to a similar effect. There are so many reasons why choosing your products carefully and with an informed mind can be a great benefit; here are my top five:
1 – ITS CLEANER
It’s no secret that everyday products such as makeup, cleaners, shampoos etc are riddled with unnecessary chemical additives. Not only are these known to have a detrimental effect on your skin and body, but the processes by which they are made, are as dirty as it gets. It’s so easy for chemicals to be contaminated by other nasties, so even if you know your stuff about the chemical you’re about to put onto your skin, you most certainly don’t know what else may be hidden with it in that pretty packaging.
2 – ITS FRIENDLIER
Manufacturing processes for chemicals contribute some big numbers to emissions of greenhouse gases, so a product that’s meant to clean has most likely left a stain on the planet before you’ve even opened it. The majority of natural products are ethically manufactured in a way that’s not pumping lots of rubbish into our environment. Furthermore, most of the companies that make them are pretty proud of their green credentials and wont hide where their ingredients have come from or how they found their way into your lotions and potions.
3 – YOUR SKIN WILL THANK YOU
It’s estimated that we plop just short of 130 ingredients onto our skin every day and of them, the majority sinks right into the bloodstream. Gross! And those that don’t get absorbed, sit on the skin and coat it with a plastic-like film that blocks up pores and lets those toxins just build and build up. Say hello to spots, dull and aged skin!
4 – ITS SAFER
We all deserve to be able to use an everyday product such as deodorant and not have our health potentially compromised, but we still do it. We scrutinise ingredients in food and question those that we are unfamiliar with or can’t pronounce so why not those that we put on our skin? After all, they’re the really dangerous ones. Unlike eating additives which can be broken down by saliva and stomach acid, skincare chemicals go straight into our blood and are neither filtered nor broken down so they build up in the body. You can only imagine what this unnatural collective of foreign bodies is doing to us.
5 – ITS BETTER FOR YOUR WALLET
The initial cost of going cleaner certainly isn’t cheaper than the alternatives, but in the long run, we end up buying less and condensing our everyday products to a core collection that we’re happy with. Who really needs a choice of shampoos? A number of different moisturisers? Try a few, find the one that works, and enjoy using it. If you want to go completely natural then things such as coconut oil, essential oils and everyday products you can find in the kitchen can easily be used as a substitute for packaged cosmetics and wont add much onto your weekly shopping bill.
Something definitely worth thinking about…
